“Keratin treatment” and “Brazilian blowout” get used almost interchangeably, and both promise smoother, shinier, less frizzy hair. But they aren’t quite the same thing. Here’s what each one is, how they differ, and how to choose.

First, the names

“Keratin treatment” is the general name for salon smoothing treatments that coat the hair and seal it with heat to reduce frizz. “Brazilian Blowout” is the name of one specific brand of smoothing treatment, but many people use “Brazilian blowout” to mean any quicker, lighter smoothing service. When you book, it’s always worth asking which treatment and formula the salon actually uses.

How they compare

Result

A classic keratin treatment usually gives a smoother, straighter finish and stronger frizz control. A Brazilian-blowout-style treatment tends to be lighter, keeping more body and natural movement while still taming frizz and adding shine.

How long it lasts

Keratin treatments generally last longer, often a few months, before fading. Lighter smoothing treatments typically fade sooner and are repeated more often.

Downtime

Many keratin formulas ask you to wait a couple of days before washing or tying your hair up. Some lighter smoothing treatments let you wash sooner. Your stylist will tell you exactly what your formula needs.

Time in the chair

Both take longer than a regular blowout. A lighter smoothing treatment is often a little faster than a full keratin service.

Who each one suits

  • Keratin treatment: thick, frizzy or very wavy hair, or anyone who wants the most smoothing and the longest-lasting results.

  • Lighter smoothing treatment: finer hair, hair you want to keep full and bouncy, or a first-timer who wants a gentler change.

If what you really want is hair that’s straight every single day, neither one is designed for that. Read our guide to Japanese straightening vs. keratin.

Ask about the formula

Smoothing products vary a lot. Some release fumes when heated, and some contain ingredients you may prefer to avoid if you’re pregnant or sensitive to strong smells. A good salon will tell you what they use and work in a well-ventilated space, so don’t be shy about asking.

Make it last

  • Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.

  • Wash a little less often and rinse with cool water.

  • Blow-dry smooth with a round brush. Your hair will dry faster than before.
