Sleek, straight and low-maintenance

Japanese hair straightening permanently straightens the hair it’s applied to, so you can skip the flat iron most mornings. It’s one of the services we’re best known for at Hair Pro Charming in Woodside, Queens.

What is Japanese hair straightening?

Japanese straightening — also called a straight perm, the TR Process or thermal reconditioning — is a chemical straightening treatment. A solution softens the bonds that give your hair its wave or curl. We then rinse, blow-dry and flat-iron your hair in small sections to set it straight, and a neutralizer locks the new shape in place.

The result is hair that stays straight through washing, humidity and rain, with no daily heat styling.

Who it’s right for

  • Wavy, frizzy or curly hair you’d like to wear straight every day

  • Anyone who spends a lot of time blow-drying or flat-ironing

  • Hair that puffs up or frizzes in humid weather

It isn’t always the right choice for hair that is heavily bleached, recently lightened or already damaged. We check your hair’s condition during your consultation and will suggest a gentler option if straightening isn’t safe for it.

How long does Japanese straightening last?

The treated hair stays straight until it grows out or is cut off. What changes is your new growth: as your natural texture comes in at the roots, you can book a touch-up on the new growth starting about six months after your treatment. Clients with very curly hair usually come back every six months, while those with less curl may only need a touch-up once a year.

What to expect at your appointment

Japanese straightening is one of our longer services, so plan for about 3 to 5 hours. The exact time depends a lot on your hair’s length and thickness. We start with a consultation, then work section by section for an even, natural-looking result.

Aftercare

Your hair is still setting after your treatment, so we’ll go over exactly what to do before you leave. In general:

  • Wait 2 days before washing your hair.

  • For about a week, avoid tight ponytails, clips and headbands, and don’t tuck your hair behind your ears. These can leave dents or marks in the hair.

  • Keep your hair dry and straight, and avoid heavy sweating.

  • Afterward, use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.

Japanese straightening vs. keratin treatment

Both treatments smooth the hair, but they do different things:

  • Japanese straightening permanently changes the structure of the treated hair for sleek, straight results. It’s best if you want straight hair every day.

  • Brazilian keratin treatment smooths frizz and softens texture while keeping some natural movement and body, and it gradually fades over a few months.

Not sure which suits you? We’ll help you choose during your consultation. You can also read more about our Brazilian keratin treatment.
